Ok here goes my story. My cat is 9-10 1/2 yrs old and in the end of December
became complete blocked and had to be rushed to the vet. Unfortunately my vet
was closed due to building a new vet building behind the old one and didn’t
open until this month. The place I had to take him to was a veterinary
referral center for special needs. Patients are referred by their general
veterinarian for treatment of a specific problem can go there for treatment.
We was informed that he had struvite crystals in his bladder and they kept
him for a week and a few days and they took the cath out and he wasn’t peeing
and then so we said well put it back in. My vet told me they shouldn’t have
taken it out but my mom tends to get confused on medical things when it comes
to animals when she was talking to our vet and he told us they wasn’t
supposed to take the cath out to see if he was peeing at all; which as I have
mention he was kinda. and in the end we landed up with a huge vet bill and a
cat that has been partially peeing since he came home in January. My vet
wants to do a Perineal Urethrostomy on him and I very worried about doing
such major surgical procedure on such an elder cat. I also own 5 other cats
and they used to using Tidy Cat and I’m concerned with what kind of litter
to use after he’s healed and better; if it comes down to doing the PU. My
concerns are stricture, incontinence, nerve damage, post -op infections and
possible reoccurrence of bladder infections. Last week he was supposed to
have the PU done but i decided to get him and X-ray and it was clear and
nothing in his bladder all the way to his urethra. My vet is unable to cath
him because he’s so swollen he is unable to pass a cath into his bladder. I
was reading under this thread that if my vet wants to do PU its possible
that when the other vet place cath’d him they damaged the urethra during
catheterization if that happened. Which makes me want to sue them but my life
is a point where it would be more trouble than its worth to go through all
the trouble of suing them. My cat is most definitely a struvite case and not
calcium oxalate case and I’m wondering maybe doing the PU is too extreme of a
measure because he’s just very swollen and not peeing like he should be. The
poor thing whines when he tries to pee and we’re assuming that its cuz it
burns or something. i did notice today that his pee smells kinda strong.
We’ve been feeding him ROYAL CANIN Veterinary Dietâ„¢ Feline URINARY SOâ„¢ 33 but
i think it sucks and has no real nutritional value to it. And i don’t like
that it says on the bag for ingredients salt. Could it be possible he has a
soft mass in the area going from his bladder to his urethra and it wouldnt
show up on an x-ray? He’s otherwise a healthy cat and he eats, drinks, plays,
and wanted to be petted and all kitty things. My vet gave him an anti
inflammatory for the swelling and it perked him up really well but he’s still
didn’t pee like he should be. Since my vet gave him the anti inflammatory
when he would go to pee he whine like it hurts and drip pee all over the
floor. When we had brought him home from the other vet place they gave us a
smooth wall muscle relaxer ( the name escapes me and my mom threw away the
bottle) to give him and it made him pee all over himself and it just broke
my heart. Well it all boils down to is there anything my vet can do for him
besides the PU?
Also I forgot to say we’ve been keeping him in my bedroom with the littermaid to
monitor his urine output and since he’s been in there and not been around
all the cats all the time.. two of my cats have deiced to hiss and growl at
him like they don’t know him and they’ve lived with him his whole life. I’ve
no idea what would be the cause to make them do this. Any idea on how I can
get them back to being friends and realize he’s not some strange cat and they
know him?
And another thing i should’ve mentioned that I had changed all my cats diet
over to Wellness ( http://www.wellnesspetfood.com/) in August or September
It’s a great food but after i switched the cat i speak over to it he kept
getting bladder infections every month after I switched foods and then got
completely blocked in Dec.
He is peeing but not at the volume he should be. The x-ray was clear and there is nothing there that neither one of us saw. And in answering Marlou answer he hasn’t been to the vet a while so its weird for them to act that way to him. His only problem is that he’s not peeing at the volume like he should be like i stated earlier. Other than that he’s doing good. My vet said he’s just really swollen and that’s all.
Oh and the blockage in Dec was the first one he has had in 6 yrs give or take.
My partner’s cat had the operation when he was about five, so that makes it 11 years ago. It is expensive, but he had a good surgeon and he came through fine. But, that still didn’t stop the crystals and he still had a few bouts, as the surgery just made them easier to pass without pain in a good stream of urine.
The first thing I did was get him off dry food, as dry food is the number one cause for bladder/urinary issues in cats, even the good stuff.
The second thing I did was start him on an apple cider vinegar regimen, adding a few drops to water and force feeding him (he wasn’t cooperative about drinking it on his own).
A few years ago my elderly neighbor’s cat was facing the same issue. Tapped out from treatments, he did not have finances or wherewithal to have the operation done. So, it was gone with the dry food, and we started his female on an ACV regimen, and juiced fresh cranberries. Every third day baking soda was added to the food. His cat’s cystitis cleared up.
Will some home remedies help? That I can’t say, as I don’t know your cat. But, I can assure you they won’t hurt.
I’ve included two links which you might find helpful in trying to get your cat back to normalcy, as well as one discussing homeopathic treatments.

Even if you do decide on the operation, he needs to have a little healing time for it to be a success. At his age — which really isn’t old — he should be fine with an operation.
